Shade grown coffee sellers and producers who use the official Smithsonian bird-friendly logo give a portion of each pound of coffee sold to the Smithsonian to support migratory bird research. Coffees with this logo mean that they are certified as shade grown and organic by an independent third-party inspector using the Smithsonian’s criteria.
Buy Shade Grown: There are lots of places to buy shade-grown coffee and help save bird habitat one cup at a time. The Smithsonian maintains a database of bird-friendly coffee sellers. Check it out here. Smithsonian
Let’s get on the radar
Since starting this project, we were surprised to discover how many people just don’t know about shade grown coffee. Here’s what we plan to do about that. You can do this too:
- Start talking about it. Tell people why shade grown is a win-win alternative
- Use social media to spread the word
- Ask if your local grocery store and coffee shop might be willing to carry a shade grown option
- Start a coffee group in the community and buy shade grown coffee in bulk
- Donate to bird-friendly organizations
$1 from each mug sold from January 1, 2019 to October 31, 2019 will be donated to a bird friendly organization in either the US or Canada. We know a few deserving non profits whose mission includes preserving habitat, understanding migratory bird behavior, saving wild places, promoting environmental education and awareness, and supporting fair trade practices around the world. Write to us about your favorite environmentally responsible org. Tell us why you think they’re great. We will announce this year’s recipient in November 2019.
